RCR 80V Error Codes Guide

RCR 80V Error Codes Guide

This article explains the most common error codes you may see on the RCR 80V display and how to resolve them step by step.

Error Code 19 – Battery Connection Issue

What it means

Error code 19 indicates that the battery is not making a solid connection with the bike.

Most common cause

The QS9 battery connector is not fully seated.

Step-by-step resolution

  1. Power the bike off.

  2. Remove the battery cover.

  3. Locate the QS9 connector on the battery.

  4. Firmly push the connector in until it cannot go in any further.

  5. Double-check that the connection feels solid and fully seated.

  6. Reinstall the battery cover and power the bike back on.

If the error code is still not disappearing

  1. Check the CanBus connector to confirm the pins are making solid contact

  2. This enables the battery to communicate with the controller, then the display

Expected result

Once the battery connector is fully seated, error code 19 should clear immediately.

Error Code 12 – Thermal (Heat) Limiting

What it means

Error code 12 indicates the bike is heat limited. This is the system’s thermal protection activating to prevent damage.

Why this happens

The motor and controller can heat up from:

  • Aggressive acceleration

  • Sustained high speeds (40–50 mph)

  • Climbing hills

  • Hard acceleration from stops or out of turns

Important performance notes

  • Hyper mode can overheat the motor in approximately 9–12 minutes based on testing.

  • Riding aggressively increases heat buildup significantly.

  • This is normal behavior and part of the bike’s protection system.

Step-by-step resolution

  1. Reduce speed immediately.

  2. Switch to Normal mode.

  3. Ride gently or come to a stop.

  4. Allow the bike time to cool before resuming aggressive riding.

Battery level reminder

  • Around 80V is approximately 50% battery.

  • At this level, we recommend:

    • Turning back toward your starting point

    • Reducing speed if your destination has not yet been reached.

Error Code 21 – Brake Signal Wire Short Circuit

What it means

Error code 21 indicates a brake signal wire short circuit.

The brake signal wire tells the controller when the brake lever is pressed, which:

  • Engages regenerative braking

  • Activates the brake light

  • Stops the motor from

Most common cause

A kink, bend, pinch, or disconnection in the brake cut-off wire coming from the brake lever assembly.

This most often occurs during assembly if the brake wire becomes pinched between two surfaces.

Step-by-step resolution

  1. Power the bike off.

  2. Locate the brake lever assemblies.

  3. Follow the brake cut-off wire from the lever down into the bike.

  4. Inspect the wire for:

    • Pinched sections

    • Sharp bends or kinks

    • Loose or disconnected connectors

  5. Pay close attention to common pinch points:

    • Near the handlebars

    • Under the top plate

    • Around steering and frame junctions

  6. Reposition the wire so it moves freely when turning the handlebars fully left and right.

  7. Secure the wire to prevent future pinching.

Expected result

Once the brake signal wire is no longer shorted or pinched, error code 21 should clear.
